About the city

Portorož/Portorose is an Adriatic coastal town in the Municipality of Piran/Pirano in south-western Slovenia. Its modern development began in the late 19th century with appearance of first health resorts. In the early 20th century it became one of the grandest seaside resorts in Central Europe, along with Opatija/Abbazia, Lido and Grado, then as part of the Austrian Littoral. Part of Italy from 1918 and 1947, it is now one of the country's major tourist areas. Located in the centre is the Hotel Palace, once one of the most important resorts for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and currently one of the finest hotels between Venice and Dubrovnik.

What you can expect

Your day starts at midday with a pickup by a deluxe car at select hotels in Portorož. Take in the scenery as you depart the Slovenian Riviera for a 45-minute drive to Lipica stud farm. Lipizzaner horses are the pride of Slovenia and every horse lover has heard of them. The Lipica Stud Farm is one of the world’s oldest stud farms, which has existed and operated continuously since its establishment in the 16th century. Visit the Lipica Stud Farm and take a private guided tour through the farm. Stop at the historic center with its famous "yard", the mansion and Velbanca – the oldest stable in Lipica. A walk through the estate is like a stroll through history. From there, proceed to an artisan picnic lunch overlooking the stud farm.

Afterwards, drive for about one hour to Goriška Brda, Slovenia’s most most widely known and prominent wine region. Stop at the Gonjače lookout tower, to get the overview of the region and then to the nearby village Šmartno. Šmartno, a village first mentioned in the 14th century in surrounded by defense walls.

The tour will continue to the old town of Šmartno, located in the center of Goriška Brda. Admire the charming scenery as you take a short walk inside the walls of this picturesque village, made up of five preserved towers, perched on a panoramic hill like an eagle’s nest which can be seen from every corner of Brda.

Your next stop is for your private wine tasting experience at a local boutique winemaker. Wine tastings will take place in the wine cellar or a tasting room and led by a professional sommelier, a winemaker or both. Red, white or sparkling wines–- whichever you prefer most, will be your choice for wine tasting of several different varieties from the wine producer (one or more of them). It is favoured that you follow three simple rules: look, smell and taste. But that is not all; the winemaker will share his/her story of how he/she makes wine and the vineyard’s history.

The last stop on your culinary tour is reserved for a five course gourmet dinner in Gredič Restaurant. The area Brda/Collio is probably one of the most exciting culinary regions in the world. Here, subtle Mediterranean influences meet strong continental tastes, demanding the disciplined Austro-Slovenian tradition to adopt vivid Italian creativity and rich heritage. The constant desire to explore, using the finest fresh ingredients, modern culinary, technological knowledge, appreciation of the aforementioned factors and the tradition make the main feature of the Gredič restaurant. With this in mind, you can quickly satisfy your curiosity, as well as your hunger, but it is most exciting when you take the time and allow yourself to be led to a gastronomic excursion.

After gourmet dinner stay in your Goriška Brda hotel or transfer to Portorož by your driver / guide.

Enjoy a hassle-free day of gorgeous views and iconic sights at Lipica stud farm and Goriška Brda wine region!

About the city

At first glance, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, seems almost too good to be true. Tucked up against the town’s e-topped hill, the baroque and folk-painted buildings of the old town are like something out of a fairytale. In fact, Ljubljana is very much a part of the real world; industry and the arts flourish here, and commerce is booming lively, lovely, and oh-so-easy for the foreign visitor, modern, sophisticated Ljubljana may well be one of the most pleasant city in Europe. Ljubljana has plenty of places to visit whether they be the city's castle which offers great views over the area from its hill top position, the fine museums and art galleries or taking in the local culture with good local food and drinks, especially beer. The hill with Ljubljana castle is situated in the city centre and narrow river Ljubljanica is slowly circulating around it. The old city centre is situated below this hill on the banks of Ljubljanica River. The focus of the city is Preseren square with its 3 bridges, Tromostovje. From there walk down Stritarjeva street to reach old Ljubljana and Ljubljana castle. Stroll down Copova street to reach Tivoli Park, a gorgeous park, famous for its boulevards, its flower garden and lake. Inside the park we have the International Centre of Graphic Arts. But to really enjoy Ljubljana walk along the Ljubljanica river banks in the evening, listen to the street music, sit in one of the numerous restaurants and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Shared tour: Best of Ljubljana old town walk with guide

day 3 - 11:00 AM - Default

Discover the European Green Capital 2016! During the tour you will see most of Ljubljana's main attractions. The guide will explain you Ljubljana's history and show you some of the nicest corners of Slovenia's capital: The Town Hall, a walking tour of Plečnik's architectural masterpieces, Križanke open-air theatre, the Napoleon monument, Central Food market, Prešeren square, Congress Square, the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge and other.

• Discover the main Ljubljana attractions

• Learn the history of the city

• Explore city secrets

• Dragon Bridge There are two legends associated with the Dragon Bridge, built in 1901. The first states that Jason, the ancient Greek mythological hero, founded the city of Ljubljana by slaying a dragon – that same infamous dragon is now portrayed in one of the four sheet-copper statues that decorate the bridge. The second legend claims that the four dragons the bridge is named after, wag their tails every time a virgin passes by. The beautiful structure of the bridge and the legends associated with it have made it one of the city’s key attractions.

• Prešeren Monument Prešeren Monument depicts the famous Slovene poet Dr. France Prešeren. He is also the author of Slovenia’s national anthem. The monument is situated in Prešeren Square, and the statue of the poet faces the window of his unanswered love, Julia Primic. The 3.35-meter (11 feet) statue is accompanied by a muse sitting on a rock above the poet, holding a laurel wreath in her hand. This famous city attraction was designed by Maks Fabiani and Ivan Zajc.

• Triple Bridge The main bridge out of the three that form Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge was built in 1842, while the other two were added later in 1932 by the notable Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. The finished design, the Triple Bridge, is now the main connecting bridge between the old medieval part of Ljubljana and the newer part of the city center.

• Robba Fountain The beautiful Robba Fountain, also known as the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, is placed by the Town Hall. It was made by the Italian Sculptor Francesco Robba in 1751. The statues of gods represent the three Carniolan River – Ljubljanica, Sava and Krka.

• Križanke Once a convent for priests and seminarians, Križanke is now a unique music and theatre venue, thanks to Jože Plečnik, who was assigned to convert the old monastery into a venue for the city’s events. Due to its exceptional acoustics, this is one of the most popular venues in the country. • Central Market Designed by Jože Plečnik, and built in 1939, the Central Market is one of the liveliest parts of Ljubljana. There are three main market areas; the covered part with stands selling traditional Slovenian products,

What you can expect

Ljubljana has been coveted over the centuries by Celts, Illyrians, Romans and finally the Slavs, who have all left their mark. One of the most prominent people to have left their mark in Ljubljana is the Slovenian Gaudi, Jože Plečnik. Like Gaudi, Plečnik was extremely imaginative and creative. He built a modern capital, but with a touch of ancient Greek architecture, by adding pillars, balusters and similar.

The focus of the city Prešeren square, the Triple Bridge, the Old Town and Ljubljana Castle, but since Ljubljana is quite petit, you can explore much more in a day or two. This capital has something for everyone; whether they be the main city attractions, museums and galleries, parks, or cafes and restaurants by Ljubljanica river.
