What you can expect

Your day starts at midday with a pickup by a deluxe car at select hotels in Portorož. Take in the scenery as you depart the Slovenian Riviera for a 45-minute drive to Lipica stud farm. Lipizzaner horses are the pride of Slovenia and every horse lover has heard of them. The Lipica Stud Farm is one of the world’s oldest stud farms, which has existed and operated continuously since its establishment in the 16th century. Visit the Lipica Stud Farm and take a private guided tour through the farm. Stop at the historic center with its famous "yard", the mansion and Velbanca – the oldest stable in Lipica. A walk through the estate is like a stroll through history. From there, proceed to an artisan picnic lunch overlooking the stud farm.

Afterwards, drive for about one hour to Goriška Brda, Slovenia’s most most widely known and prominent wine region. Stop at the Gonjače lookout tower, to get the overview of the region and then to the nearby village Šmartno. Šmartno, a village first mentioned in the 14th century in surrounded by defense walls.

The tour will continue to the old town of Šmartno, located in the center of Goriška Brda. Admire the charming scenery as you take a short walk inside the walls of this picturesque village, made up of five preserved towers, perched on a panoramic hill like an eagle’s nest which can be seen from every corner of Brda.

Your next stop is for your private wine tasting experience at a local boutique winemaker. Wine tastings will take place in the wine cellar or a tasting room and led by a professional sommelier, a winemaker or both. Red, white or sparkling wines–- whichever you prefer most, will be your choice for wine tasting of several different varieties from the wine producer (one or more of them). It is favoured that you follow three simple rules: look, smell and taste. But that is not all; the winemaker will share his/her story of how he/she makes wine and the vineyard’s history.

The last stop on your culinary tour is reserved for a five course gourmet dinner in Gredič Restaurant. The area Brda/Collio is probably one of the most exciting culinary regions in the world. Here, subtle Mediterranean influences meet strong continental tastes, demanding the disciplined Austro-Slovenian tradition to adopt vivid Italian creativity and rich heritage. The constant desire to explore, using the finest fresh ingredients, modern culinary, technological knowledge, appreciation of the aforementioned factors and the tradition make the main feature of the Gredič restaurant. With this in mind, you can quickly satisfy your curiosity, as well as your hunger, but it is most exciting when you take the time and allow yourself to be led to a gastronomic excursion.

After gourmet dinner stay in your Goriška Brda hotel or transfer to Portorož by your driver / guide.

Enjoy a hassle-free day of gorgeous views and iconic sights at Lipica stud farm and Goriška Brda wine region!

Goriška Brda

About the city

Goriška Brda region, located in the Western part of Slovenia, is sheltered behind mountain ranges to the east and north. This secluded corner of the country is often referred to as the “Tuscany of Slovenia” due to its hilltop villages, orchards, cypress trees and of course, its rolling hillsides lined with vines. Thanks to its favourable climatic weather conditions, wine growing goes back to pre-Roman times, when the area was inhabited by the Venets. Besides the jaw-dropping landscape, the region has a rich cultural heritage as well, which can be observed in the architecture of the speckled villages and castles, customs, habits and distinctive dialect. One such village is Šmartno village, situated in the geographical centre of Brda. Its houses are grouped together around the largest church in Brda, the Church of St. Martin. This Baroque church boasts beautiful frescoes painted by Slovene artist Tone Kralj. A walk around the narrow streets of Šmartno village will definjitely take you back to medieval times.Brda region is brimming with monuments memorials, one such is the bronze View tower in Gonjače, dedicated to the 315 citizens of Brda who their lives in WWII. It was built in 1961 and is the most widely known monument in the area. For more remnants of the past, the 609 m peak of the Sabotin hill encourages you to take a hike and visit the open-air museum on you way, where you will see remains from WWI. once on top, the view of the emerald Soča river and its surroundings is breathing. Going back to architecture, the Dobrovo castle is definitely one of the nicest castles in Goriška Brda region. On the first floor you enter the Hall of Knights where the coat-of-arms of aristocratic families are exhibited. Today, the venue hosts numerous musical and other cultural events throughout the year. The castle’s ground floor has a restaurant serving great food, and the cellar hides a wine shop where you can taste several local wines.

Be mesmerized by the beguiling beauty of Postojna & Predjama on a private tour from Goriška Brda. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, venture to the majestic Karst Caves to capture photographs of this natural phenomena. However, there is only one such case where the name of a branch of science is entirely based on a landscape – karstology. The Slovenian limestone plateau known as Kras – the Karst in English – gave its name to a typical landscape formed on carbonate rock, and it is indeed here that karstology began to develop. Did you know that more than 1000 caves were founded in Karst region?

Highlights

• Travel to the dreamlike underworld on board of a train and explore the natural formations of the cave that took millions of years to form

• Dine on Slovenian specialties for lunch, sample delicious sweets and try local wine in a traditional Slovenian village.

• Learn from your knowledgeable licensed guide about the history and significance of the sights you visit

• Travel in comfort by luxury car during this Karst & caves most popular day tour.

What you can expect

Depart from your Goriška Brda hotel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and travel to world famous Karst caves. Postojna Cave is the only karst cave with a cave railway. For 140 years it has been taking visitors to see stalactites and stalagmites and other features created by water. During an hour and a half long guided tour, you learn about all of the most important karst features, you see the largest, 5-metre-high stalagmite known as Brilliant, you visit the oldest underground post office in the world and the most famous underground animal – the human fish (proteus).

Stop to capture photographs at visionary viewing spots and listen as your guide offers insight into the geology and history of this iconic Predjama Castle, the largest cave castle in the world. For over 800 years it has been guarding a rock face, 123 meters high. Mysterious underground tunnels connect it with the cave directly beneath. The castle, which has also been a film location, offered refuge to its legendary owner Erazem Predjamski in the 15th century. This robber knight resisted a siege for over a year in his castle with its incredible appearance and location.

Head next to a local restaurant to enjoy a Slovenian homemade three course lunch with typical Karst products. In Karst, the Slavic, Germanic and Romanic cuisines have been interlaced for centuries. Based on this combination, the Karst cuisine - full of taste and Mediterranean freshness - was born. The Karst cuisine is seasonal, enriched with herbs, wild plants and fruit.

When your tour comes to an end, travel to your hotel in Lower Carnolia in a private vehicle and bid your guide farewell with magical memories of Karst Region.

Otočec

About the city

The region of Lower Carniola is home to Otočec Castle, built on an island and surrounded by Krka River. Romance and fairy-tales are words that come to mind when you see a wooden bridge, the broad expanse of the blue Krka River bustling with swans and ducks, mighty trees, and an island surmounted by a Gothic and Renaissance building. Otočec Castle is the only island castle in Slovenia, and is surrounded by a 200-year old park filled with indigenous and exotic tree species. It dates to the 13th century when it was occupied by the Knights of Otočec, vassals of the Bishops of Freising. After that it had several owners from the Tirolean Villanders family at the beginning of the 16th century, to the Margheri de Commadona family, who owned Otočec up to the end of the Second World War. The natural conditions, which are created at Otočec by the Krka River with its numerous islets, tufa shelves, river channels and exuberant vegetation, represent one of the most picturesque and attractive stretches of river. It has a great variety of aquatic habitats, which are characterized by 32 species of fish, including many rare and endangered species. For bird watchers, Mute Swans, Mallard Ducks, Grey Herons, Great Mitterns, Moorhens, and Kingfishers, with a greater variety of bird species in the winter, favour the Castle environs. Otočec castle was burnt during WWII and the castle furniture was destroyed or dispersed. Both wooden bridges were also damaged. Luckily, the castle was renovated under the supervision of the heritage protection service in the 1950’s, the only castle in the Lower Carniola region to be renovated of the many that were burnt during the WWII. The Castle Park was laid out during the period at the turn of the 18th century. The oldest trees in the park are around 100 years, but the majority were planted after the renovation of the castle the 1950’s. Native tree species are black alder, white willow, black poplar and oak. Today the Castle houses a world-class restaurant and a luxurious hotel, a member of the Relais & Châteaux chain. Weddings and other important events are staged here. A golf course and a health resort are close by.

Ljubljana

About the city

At first glance, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, seems almost too good to be true. Tucked up against the town’s e-topped hill, the baroque and folk-painted buildings of the old town are like something out of a fairytale. In fact, Ljubljana is very much a part of the real world; industry and the arts flourish here, and commerce is booming lively, lovely, and oh-so-easy for the foreign visitor, modern, sophisticated Ljubljana may well be one of the most pleasant city in Europe. Ljubljana has plenty of places to visit whether they be the city's castle which offers great views over the area from its hill top position, the fine museums and art galleries or taking in the local culture with good local food and drinks, especially beer. The hill with Ljubljana castle is situated in the city centre and narrow river Ljubljanica is slowly circulating around it. The old city centre is situated below this hill on the banks of Ljubljanica River. The focus of the city is Preseren square with its 3 bridges, Tromostovje. From there walk down Stritarjeva street to reach old Ljubljana and Ljubljana castle. Stroll down Copova street to reach Tivoli Park, a gorgeous park, famous for its boulevards, its flower garden and lake. Inside the park we have the International Centre of Graphic Arts. But to really enjoy Ljubljana walk along the Ljubljanica river banks in the evening, listen to the street music, sit in one of the numerous restaurants and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
