Bohinj

About the city

Many visitors to Slovenia say they’ve never seen a more beautiful lake than Bled…that is, until they’ve seen Lake Bohinj, just 26km to the southwest. We’ll refrain from weighing in on the Bled versus Bohinj debate other than to say we see their point. Admittedly, Bohinj lacks Bled’s glamour, but it’s less crowded and in many ways more authentic. It’s an ideal summer holiday destination. People come primarily to chill out or to swim in the crystal-clear, blue-green water, with leisurely cycling and walking trails to occupy them. There are lots of outdoor pursuits like kayaking, hiking and horseback riding if you’ve got the energy, and the charming villages to the lake’s northeast, remarkably, have remained faithful to traditional occupations like dairy herding and farming.

Bled

About the city

The most recognizable symbol of the lake is the Church of the Assumption with its long and diverse history, however the lush greenery also hides other interesting island buildings, like the bell-tower, church, chaplain's house, provost's house, small hermitage and some mysterious legends. The most renowned symbol of the island is the Church of the Assumption which demands a climb up the 99 stone-step staircase. In case you visit the island in just the right time, make time to witness a wedding in the romantic environment. As far as the wishing bell is concerned. Don't just watch it. Ring it.

Bled Castle Admission Ticket

day 2 - Bled Castle Admission Ticket
Visit: Bled Castle (Blejski Grad)

Enter the castle and enjoy the bird's-eye views on the shimmering lake and the Julian Alps from the perched courtyard. Fresh air and the warm sun combined with Bled's history, exhibited in the castle museum, will make you wonder about the medieval life at majestic Bled Castle. When strolling through the mysterious Castle premises, do not forget to visit the wine cellar, Gutenberg's press chamber, the castle's chapel and the museum.

Built as a stronghold for the aristocratic bishops of the Brixen dynasty to defend their territories from attack, its fortified Romanesque walls and ramparts today hide a largely 16th‐century Renaissance castle built after a devastating earthquake in 1511 destroyed the previous building. It is centered around a pair of courtyards, constructed in an enticing jumble of red‐roofed wine cellars, forges, servants’ quarters, mansion, a stately knight’s hall and a chapel swathed in frescoes.

Ljubljana

About the city

At first glance, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, seems almost too good to be true. Tucked up against the town’s e-topped hill, the baroque and folk-painted buildings of the old town are like something out of a fairytale. In fact, Ljubljana is very much a part of the real world; industry and the arts flourish here, and commerce is booming lively, lovely, and oh-so-easy for the foreign visitor, modern, sophisticated Ljubljana may well be one of the most pleasant city in Europe. Ljubljana has plenty of places to visit whether they be the city's castle which offers great views over the area from its hill top position, the fine museums and art galleries or taking in the local culture with good local food and drinks, especially beer. The hill with Ljubljana castle is situated in the city centre and narrow river Ljubljanica is slowly circulating around it. The old city centre is situated below this hill on the banks of Ljubljanica River. The focus of the city is Preseren square with its 3 bridges, Tromostovje. From there walk down Stritarjeva street to reach old Ljubljana and Ljubljana castle. Stroll down Copova street to reach Tivoli Park, a gorgeous park, famous for its boulevards, its flower garden and lake. Inside the park we have the International Centre of Graphic Arts. But to really enjoy Ljubljana walk along the Ljubljanica river banks in the evening, listen to the street music, sit in one of the numerous restaurants and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Bohemian Slovenia with Beer Tasting and Slovenian Tapas

day 4 - Bohemian Slovenia with Beer Tasting and Slovenian Tapas
We’ll start our Ljubljana tour at one of the biggest and most impressive city squares, where you will learn a few facts about the most important buildings and social realist monuments that shaped the Slovenia of today.

This historic stroll will take you through the centre of Ljubljana, passing local shops and cafés, and for a walk on the ancient Roman wall. We’ll visit important works by the respected architect Jože Plečnik, then get a peek into the national library and legendary open-air concert hall, Krizanke, with its dark secrets.

As we enjoy the vibe of the bustling local art scene and tiny medieval streets, we will literally pass the border between central Europe and the Balkans, to reach the academy of music where we can take in its rich history and fine tunes.

After soaking in the echoes of the academy, we’ll explore the Baroque part of town, full of bars and galleries, while avoiding tourist traps. We’ll stop into a hip café near the town hall for a sip of local craft beer and a chat about contemporary life in Ljubljana.

Crossing beautiful bridges over the Ljubljanica river and exploring romantic sweet spots and secret corners is a must while making your way to the Slovenian Philharmonic hall and a breathtaking view of the city. We will then go on to explore the Bohemian corner of Ljubljana while passing the Art Nouveau highlights. We’ll enter an old factory full of galleries you won’t find in guidebooks. Take your time soaking up the work of modern artists as you bond with them through their images.

We’ll finish our Ljubljana tour passing the cult band Laibach’s studio and entering the “city within the city,” or legendary Metelkova. Surrounded with graffiti, wild street art, and music clubs, you will get to try some traditional local beer as we discuss how Slovenian 80s music paved the way for the country’s independence.

Traditional Slovenian Dinner and Show

day 5 - Ljubljana Traditional Slovenian Dinner and Show
Slovenia, a country tucked between Austria, Hungary, Italy and Croatia, sometimes gets overlooked by travelers doing the grand tour of Europe. This is a mistake. Ljubljana is one of the most underrated capital cities in Europe, and you'll gain a new appreciation of Slovenian culture and history at this traditional folk dance and dinner show.

Make your way to central Ljubljana to enjoy this evening of merriment. When you get to the restaurant, you're greeted with šklojce, (traditional Slovenian schnapps) and some dried fruit.

Then, take a seat at your table and sink your teeth into four traditional courses, washed down with a glass of Slovenian wine. Everything from peasant-style chicken (pork option is available upon request) to salad to a traditional dessert is offered. See the Itinerary for a sample menu.
Between each course, enjoy some folksy entertainment. Watch three charming dance performances, and then after your main course, take part in Slovenian dances and games such as pouštertanc, which translates as 'the cushion dance.' Learn, too, how to polka.
